HOW WILL BANA PELE WORK?

The caregiver must be informed of the rights that the child is entitled to and referred to the other facilities where he/she can access the relevant services.

If the point of entry is social development service point, the official responsible should ensure that the child is assisted to get all the other services. If the point is a school, the official responsible should ensure that the child gets all the services that are provided by the school and referred to the nearest social development service point for further assistance. If the point is a clinic, the child should be referred to the social development service point to access all other services.

WHAT DOCUMENTS ARE REQUIRED TO APPLY FOR THE BANA PELE PROGRAMME?

Child Support Grant
•  Identity document of the child
•  Identity document/s of the care giver/s
•  Death certificate of parents (if applicable)
•  Proof of income of household if under R1 2000.00 per month.

Psychosocial services
Children's Court order from the Commissioner of Child Welfare.  

Foster care grant

•  The Court order placing the child into the foster parents' custody,
•  the child's identity document
•  the foster parents identity document.

School Feeding

Application forms are available at the schools that the child attends. If the school is in a Quintile 1 area as designated by the Gauteng Department of Education the whole school qualifies for the programme.  

Exemption from school fees

Application forms are available at the schools that the child attends. If the school is in a Quintile 1 area as designated by the Gauteng Department of Education the whole school qualifies for exemption.

HOW LONG DO I QUALIFY FOR THE BENEFITS OF THIS PROGRAMME?
The benefits will be received as long as the child receives the Child Support Grant. If the conditions of the Child Support Grant changes this will affect the length of the Bana Pele programme.

DO OFFICIALS CHECK MY DETAILS? IF SO HOW OFTEN DOES THIS HAPPEN?

There will be a process of checking and verification of the information given. Once a year the school will fill out a form confirming that the child who receives the package of services still benefits and still attends school regularly. This form will be forwarded to the Social Security section of the Department of Social Development.  

WHERE DO I GO IF I HAVE A PROBLEM?  

If you have a problem with the following services:

  • Application for a Child Support Grant
  • Psychosocial services
  • School uniform programme

Please report your problem to the Regional Director,

Department of Social Development in your Region.

If you have a problem with the following services:

•  Exemption from the payment of school fees
•  School nutrition programme
•  Free school transport if you stay further than 5 kilometers from the nearest school

Please report your problem to the Principal of the school where your child attends and then to the District Director in the Gauteng Education District.

If you have a problem with the following services:

  • Access to free health care under the age of 6 years
  • Access to free health care at primary health care clinics over the age of 6 years
  • Integrated management of childhood illnesses
  • Expanded programme of immunisation
  • Growth monitoring and promotion
  • Promotion, protection and support of breast feeding
  • Screening for obstacles to learning Grade R and grade 7

Please report your problem to the District Director Gauteng Department of Health.
